ABOUT THE PROJECT

Dreaming about mushrooms dreaming about me sleeping between their gills is an embodied research project that evokes the desire to establish a shared perspective with mushrooms, from which to create language, memory, body, and meaning together. The project explores the intricate relationships that can be established with another companion species, appealing to the construction of an expanded kinship beyond the epistemic framework of human exceptionalism, situated within queer post-natural (and post-human) ecologies. As part of this process, speculative embodied technologies and strategies are being developed, intertwining exercises in fiction, biological experimentation, and artistic practice.

“Dreaming about mushrooms […]” is articulated through several tentacles that, like the hyphae of a mycelium, gather and connect different moments of research and creation. In Metabolic Affair. I eat you, you eat me (2022 – ongoing), the research focuses on exploring the possibilities of establishing a metabolic bond with mushrooms. Through experimentation with matter and tissues, it investigates metabolic processes as a means of connection between the organic and the affective, appealing to metabolism’s capacity to function as a system of memory and language. By using organic matter from one’s own body as food for the mushrooms, the project explores the circulation of something more than energy through the trophic processes of assimilation and transformation of matter. Throughout this process of bodily feedback, a proximity becomes evident that, through an exercise of material reciprocity, reveals new ways of building kinship.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE 

Metabolic affair : re-rooted bodies is a speculative bio-fiction exploring the two-year-long metabolic affair between the mycelium and the artist. Through the use of an SF-powered technological device, the performance explores the desire to share bodies and grounds in an affective entanglement, questioning how we create bonds beyond power exchange, feeding, domestication, and deterritorialisation.

Fem_Lab exchange Catalonia-Austria is a collaboration between Mz* Baltazar’s Lab and Hangar Barcelona promoted by the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe to support the artistic exchange between a Catalonia female* artist and Mz* Baltazar’s Lab collective.

The Fem_Lab residency is the result of an open call promoted by Hangar, opened to an artist or collective working in any creative discipline who are carrying out an art project which can relate to the term “hacking” and works on the intersection of Art, Science and Tech through a (trans)feminist lens. The residence has the form of one-week and ends with a public presentation Mz* Baltazar’s Lab.

Spoiler alert: this event will not be about the k. u. k. monarchy [short for kaiserlich-königlich], but rather about the collisions of capital and cosmos [Kapital u. Kosmos in German language]. On the occasion of her solo show “read-only memory [lashing polar light edition]” Rosanna Marie Pondorf will be discussing digital media, value cycles and solar storms with art researcher Mareike Schwarz. The discursive tour is dedicated to the fragility of our digital environment, which is discharged in the material contrasts of the newly created, sculptural works of art.

Self-created, invisible, all-encompassing constructions and hierarchies dominate the artistic practice of Rosanna Marie Pondorf, a conceptual artist based in Munich, Germany. In 2024, she graduated her diploma studies with Prof. Peter Kogler at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and was honoured with the DebütantInnen Preis. Since 2015, Pondorf has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Germany, Bulgaria, Austria and Estonia.

Anlässlich ihrer Einzelausstellung „read-only memory [lashing polar light edition]“ wird Rosanna Marie Pondorf mit der Kunstwissenschaftlerin Mareike Schwarz über digitale Medien, Wertkreisläufe und Sonnenstürme sprechen. Die diskursive Führung ist der Fragilität unserer digitalen Umwelt gewidmet, die sich in materiellen Kontrasten der neu geschaffenen, skulpturalen Kunstwerke entlädt.

Selbstgeschaffene, unsichtbare, allumfassende Konstruktionen und Hierarchien dominieren die künstlerische Praxis der in München lebenden Konzeptkünstlerin Rosanna Marie Pondorf. 2024 schloss sie ihr Diplomstudium bei Prof. Peter Kogler an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München ab und wurde mit dem DebütantInnen Preis ausgezeichnet. Seit 2015 hat Pondorf an zahlreichen Gruppen- und Einzelausstellungen in Deutschland, Bulgarien, Österreich und Estland teilgenommen.

As part of Vienna Modern 2024, the Institute for Transacoustic Research is dealing with the number 12 and thus indirectly paying homage to Arnold Schönberg. The participants of this walk are placed in a “dodecamania” and equipped with a research journal. In this they can enter their own research results on the number 12 during the course of the walk. At each location there is a stamp that represents one of the 12 tones. These stamps are to be arranged individually in the research journal. Explore new ways to understand and express sexual response in “Translating Desire,” a workshop that reimagines pleasure through the lenses of data and sound. We’ll delve into the psychophysiology of arousal and orgasm, learning to measure bodily responses like pulse and skin conductivity. Through hands-on training, participants will assemble bio-signal capturing devices and use simple coding to collect and analyze this data.
In the second part of the workshop, transform these signals into music, creating soundscapes that reflect the emotional rhythms of pleasure. Through sonification techniques, learn to convert data into melodies that evoke sensations of intimacy and excitement.

In this beginner-to-intermediate workshop, participants will explore 3D scanning using mobile phones, learning to capture objects as well as bodies and transform them into digital models. Starting with basic scanning techniques, participants will be guided through capturing and refining detailed scans on their devices. The workshop will also cover exporting and optimizing these 3D models for applications such as virtual environments, animations, and digital sculptures. Participants will gain practical skills in 3D scanning, working with digital files, and using new tools to expand their creative practice.

The workshop is part of all*makers*, an FFG research project between the Centre for Human Computer Interaction SalzburgHappylab Vienna, Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory and the Austrian Institute of Technology.

Mz* Baltazar is proud to present the first solo exhibition of Rosanna Marie Pondorf in Vienna, inviting you to a close glimpse into her artistic practice, known for its diverse use of media and materials. Handmade paper crafted from devalued euro banknotes, glitched screenshots engraved in marble, and deconstructed server racks—all these elements come together in an experimental installation. Pondorf combines technological fragments with tangible traces of our contemporary digital realm, resituating them in a new visual and conceptual context with a provocative and challenging approach.

“read-only memory [lashing polar light edition]” navigates between utopia and dystopia, reflecting on the fragility of our digital age. Solar storms, capable of disrupting the planet earth electromagnetic field and causing blackouts, represent an imminent threat to all. However, these same natural phenomena also give rise to the breathtaking beauty of the northern lights—a captivating spectacle that stands in stark contrast to the potential for destruction. Pondorf’s works explore this paradoxical space between danger and beauty, prompting reflections on the power and vulnerability of the digital realm.

The concept of “read-only memory” refers to a stationary state—much like ROM (read-only memory), in which data can only be accessed but not modified. As ROM, the exhibition remains in an immutable, Irreversible and changeable state. It stores the urgent questions of our time without providing concrete answers. Instead, Pondorf invites the audience to pause, to accept their condition of “read-only” and reflect on the state of our world, our technological advancements, and the future that lies ahead.

Pondorfs Werke erkunden diesen paradoxen Raum zwischen Gefahr und Schönheit und regen dazu an, über die Macht und Verletzlichkeit der digitalen Welt nachzudenken.

Der Titel „read-only memory“ (Festwertspeicher) verweist auf einen Zustand der Unveränderlichkeit, ähnlich wie ROM (read-only memory), bei dem Daten nur abgerufen, aber nicht verändert werden können. Die Ausstellung bleibt in diesem Sinne ein festgehaltener, unveränderbarer Moment und speichert die drängenden Fragen unserer Zeit, ohne konkrete Antworten zu liefern. Stattdessen lädt Pondorf das Publikum ein, in den Zustand des „Nur-Lesens“ einzutauchen, ihn zu akzeptieren und über den Zustand unserer Welt, unseren technologischen Fortschritt und die Zukunft nachzudenken.

Anna Watzinger’s upcoming exhibition at Mz* Baltazar’s Lab presents a selection of works from 2016 to the present, unified by the recurring theme of the mirror. In her serie of video essays she explores the mirror as far more than a simple reflective surface. For Watzinger, the mirror is a liminal space—one that is intangible, elusive, and inherently invisible, an interface between reality and virtuality. The mirrored image only exists through the gaze of an observer. As this embodied gaze moves and shifts, the mirror’s reflection—just like the reality it captures—transforms, presenting viewers with a virtual image in constant motion, as the artist calls it — a “livestream mirror scan”.

The concept of corporeality and sensoric perception is central to Watzinger’s work, as her body becomes a key element in this interplay. At times, her body is the mirror itself, the object of animation reflected on the surface, while at others, it assists the mirror, pushing her physical abilities to the very limit. In Watzinger’s works, the mirror is understood beyond metaphor—it becomes an obsessive theme that she explores to the very limits of the physical and the perceptible.

The immersive installation created specifically for Mz* Baltazar’s Lab, is inspired by the setting of the ancient myth of Narcissus —yet reimagined in his absence. Instead, a non-human agent and the visitors are left to engage with the reflective surfaces. Watzinger introduces “Narcissism 2.0,” where screens act as digital mirrors, subtly critiquing our dependence on digital technology. In particular she makes a reference to the proliferation of “selfies pictures” as a prominent form of identity construction in the digital age.

Yet, Watzinger’s use of digital tools is not an end in itself. These technologies merely capture the visible aspects of her artistic exploration, setting the stage for deeper reflections on identity, power, control, and privacy in a world dominated by digital interfaces. Drawing from that she raises the question: is it time to reconsider our relationship with technology and reclaim a more analog and sensorial way of living, one less dependent on the pervasive influence of the digital world?

Die kommende Ausstellung von Anna Watzinger im Mz* Baltazar’s Lab versammelte eine Auswahl von Arbeiten 2016-heute), die durch das wiederkehrende Thema des Spiegels miteinander vereint sind. In ihrer Serie von Video-Essays erforscht sie den Spiegel als weit mehr als eine einfache reflektierende Oberfläche. Für Watzinger ist der Spiegel ein Grenzraum (Zwischenraum), der nicht greifbar, schwer fassbar und inhärent unsichtbar ist, eine Schnittstelle zwischen Realität und Virtualität. Das gespiegelte Bild existiert nur durch den Blick des Betrachters. Wenn sich dieser verkörperte Blick bewegt und verschiebt, verwandelt sich das Spiegelbild – genau wie die Realität, die es einfängt – und präsentiert dem Betrachter ein virtuelles Bild in ständiger Bewegung, wie die Künstlerin es nennt – einen „Livestream-Spiegel Scan“.

Das Konzept der Körperlichkeit und Sinnesreize ist für Watzingers Arbeit von zentraler Bedeutung, da ihr Körper zu einem Schlüsselelement in diesem Wechselspiel wird. Mal ist ihr Körper der Spiegel selbst, das Objekt der Animation, das sich auf der Oberfläche spiegelt, mal assistiert er dem Spiegel, indem er ihre körperlichen Fähigkeiten bis an die Grenzen ausreizt. In Watzingers Arbeiten wird der Spiegel über die Metapher hinaus verstanden – er wird zu einer intensiven Projektionsfläche, welche sie bis an die Grenzen des Körperlichen und Wahrnehmbaren auslotet.

Die eigens für das Mz* Baltazar’s Lab geschaffene immersive Installation ist inspiriert vom Schauplatz des antiken Mythos von Narziss – jedoch in Abwesenheit von Narziss neu interpretiert. Stattdessen wird ein nicht-menschlicher Akteur und die BesucherInnen mit den reflektierenden Oberflächen konfrontiert. Watzinger verweist dabei auf den „Narzissmus 2.0“, bei denen Bildschirme als digitale Spiegel fungieren und übt damit auf subtile Weise Kritik an unserer Abhängigkeit von der digitalen Technologie. Insbesondere verweist sie auf die Verbreitung von „Selfie-Bildern“ als eine herausragende Form der Identitätskonstruktion im digitalen Zeitalter.

Watzingers Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge ist jedoch kein Selbstzweck. Diese Technologien fangen lediglich die sichtbaren Aspekte ihrer künstlerischen Erkundung ein und bilden die Grundlage für tiefergehende Überlegungen zu Identität, Macht, Kontrolle und Privatsphäre in einer von digitalen Schnittstellen dominierten Welt. Daraus leitet sie die Frage ab: Ist es an der Zeit, unsere Beziehung zur Technologie zu überdenken und eine wieder mehr analogere und sinnlichere Lebensweise einzufordern, die weniger abhängig ist vom allgegenwärtigen Einfluss der digitalen Welt? Abiona Esther Ojo is a textile artist and sculptor. 

While her practice manifests through and in various mediums such as textile art and sculpture, Esther’s inspiration is often autobiographical. By looking at her own embodied history, she connects her personal experiences to broader, socially relevant issues.

Un/Typical

In the exhibition ‘Un/Typical’, Cindy Fodor explores the question of how aesthetics can be rethought in a new and sustainable way at the level of material production. When creating bioplastics, Cindy Fodor focuses on experimentation, the result of which forms a contrast to conventional standardised, smooth and homogeneous materials. With her irregular bioplastic fabrics, the artist wants to challenge conventions and explore new aesthetic possibilities.

In a practical workshop, the All*Makers*Brunch, on Saturday, 7 September 2024, 11-12:30, the artist will share her knowledge. Together we will each create a sample of bioplastic. The workshop is aimed at a maximum of 6 participants. Please register by 6 September via email to olivia.jaques@mzbaltazarslaboratory.org.

The workshop will take place as part of the Kulturfest Riviera Brigittenau, a cultural festival on and around Wallensteinplatz on 7 September 2024. Cindy Fodor is a fashion designer and artist who works at the interface of fashion design, science and technology. Instead of an internship in a tailor’s shop or a designer’s studio, she completed an internship in a makerspace (Happylab Vienna https://happylab.at/de_vie/), where she learnt 3D modelling, 3D printing and laser cutting methods. She is currently working on combining sustainable materials with 3D printing technology. When working with biomaterials, she takes a step back and starts the design process with the materials. She develops her fabrics in her home lab.

Das Kollektiv von Mz* Baltazar’s Lab realisiert im Rahmen der gemeinsam gestalteten Lehrveranstaltung “Technologien/Praxen | Digitale Kommunikations- und Medienwelten” des Studienganges KKP an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst Wien eine Gruppenausstellung, welche die künstlerischen Ergebnisse der Studierenden zum Lehrveranstaltungsthema “Undoing & Doing Manuals” in den Räumlichkeiten des Mz* Baltazar’s Lab zeigen.

Wie können wir Technologien entwerfen und nutzen, die mit den Normen einer konsumorientierten, frauenfeindlichen, rassistischen, leistungsfähigen, geschlechtsbinären und heteropatriarchalen Gesellschaft brechen? Durch gemeinsames Bauen, Demontieren, Hinterfragen, gegenseitigem Zuhören, Überdenken und Experimentieren wird ein vielschichtiger Zugang zum Thema “Undoing & Doing Manuals” präsentiert.

After stripping the vomit of Baudrillard, Brener and Nietzsche from their clothes, the Cherepanovs continue their trans-disciplinary, trans-local, trans-agent expedition that began in a small town in the Urals. In their infantile way, they have deconstructed and appropriated the repressive instrument of the state: urban CCTV cameras. “If the state wants to control us, then being afraid and hiding from such cameras means playing to the score set by this government. But exposing yourself to the camera and performing actions means overcoming fear and forcing the overseer to act according to your own score and to observe your own performance” muses CickinDunt.

Johanna Tinzls Installation in Mz.* Baltazar’s Lab ist dem Verschwinden der Gletscher gewidmet, deren Topografien und Oberflächen die Künstlerin seit 2019 mittels Abgusstechnik archiviert. Die fragilen Skulpturen zeugen auch von der körperlichen Erfahrung, mit der sich die Künstlerin angesichts dieser unmöglichen Dokumentation eines unaufhaltsamen Prozesses konfrontiert sieht. Der Film verweist auf ein anderes, mythologisches Wissen über das Wesen der Gletscher, das sich für zukünftige Formen des Zusammenlebens aktivieren lässt.

Inspired by the Herta Müller technique of “collage-poetic” writing, in this workshop, we will elevate word collages and writing with images into true poetic works of art – a combination of scissors and paper with profound meaning. We encounter words everywhere, and each one of them is capable of telling a whole story. We will cut out letters and words from newspapers, magazines, and advertising brochures together. With our life plans, experiences, and a feminist sense of design, we will set these fragments into new texts and compose captivating collages.

Inspiriert von der Herta-Müller-Technik des “collage-poetischen” Schreibens, werden wir in diesem Workshop Wortcollagen und das Schreiben mit Bildern zu wahren poetischen Kunstwerken erheben – eine Kombination aus Schere und Papier mit tiefsinniger Bedeutung. Worte begegnen uns überall, und jedes von ihnen ist in der Lage, eine ganze Geschichte zu erzählen. Wir werden gemeinsam Buchstaben und Wörter aus Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Werbebroschüren ausschneiden. Mit unseren Lebensentwürfen, Erfahrungen und einem feministischen Sinn für Gestaltung setzen wir diese Fragmente zu neuen Texten zusammen und komponieren fesselnde Collagen.

Muss Elektronik immer aus gefährlichem Schrott bestehen? Wie wäre es mit fair produzierter und nachhaltiger Technologie und Hardware?

Fair Trade beschäftigt uns in vielen Alltagsbereichen – aber auch in der Technologie? Wie könnte eine nachhaltig und fair produzierte Technologie von morgen aussehen? Aus Pflanzen? Wachs oder Eierschalen?

In diesem interaktiven Workshop in Kooperation mit dem Happylab Wien und dem feministischen Kollektiv Mz* Baltazar’s Lab (PATRÍCIA J.REIS  & PETRA  WEIXELBRAUN) steht – neben Fragen rund um das Thema – das eigene Ausprobieren im Mittelpunkt.

Teilnehmerinnen werden selbst zu Forscher*innen und Erfinder*innen, die aus selbst gebauten Lautsprecher oder Sensoren interaktive Schaltkreise gestalten, die weder Umwelt noch Menschen schädigen können. Mit selbst gemachten elektronischen Bauteilen, z. B. aus Ton, Magneten, Eisenstaub und recycelten Materialien aus der näheren Umgebung, werden Ideen zum Schwingen oder Surren gebracht. Zum Einsatz kommen ausschließlich Elektronikteile, die unter fairen Arbeitsbedingungen, nachhaltig hergestellt wurden und ohne die üblichen Lieferketten von „conflict materials“ auskommen.

Workshop by Mara Oscar Cassiani

Expanded rituals explode from algorithmic bubbles created on the net. Algorithms become the cue for a collective and random ritual of users: fragments of belonging, but also unconscious carriers of signifiers and archetypes. 

In this workshop Mara Oscar Cassiani shares with the participants the execution of a series of gifs/ memes related to her own algorithmic bubble, collected in tarot cards according to the criterion of ritual female archetypes. Through this process she will transform her algorithms into a shared online/offline reality and an expanded witcha group ritual experience that transcends individual media practice and meditates on the themes of traditional rituals as a moment of exchange, healing and empowerment of those who participate.

Lecture by Arianna Forte: Casting a spell in computational regimes: ritual practices for a transfeminist counter-apocalypse 

Divinatory readings of the flow of data and ads generated by our smartphones, ritual sessions of digital “healing” from the data trauma suffered on social media, spells inscribed in the codes of raster files to reclaim our cultural identities by taking selfies. Who are the witches who navigate digital systems and interpret them with ritual practices between the artistic, the magical and the political?

From a critical reflection on the ongoing cultural and existential transformation that sees data and computation as phenomena that have re-signified our presence in the global and hyper-connected world and that reveal new forms of domination and subjugation, the present investigation is an examination of artistic practices envied as “rituals of resistance” at these systems.

Specifically, a close look will be made at the phenomenon that is referred to by the author as “Digital Esoterism”. Pointing, to the new generations of artists who in the post-covid era adopt the archetype of witchcraft to navigate systems of computational oppression: from Cyberwitches claiming a 2.0 spirituality, Digital Doulas proposing data healing, to Digital Tarot Readers in which algorithms are conceived as divinatory prediction systems. They claim a transfeminist approach in direct connection with the experiences of Cyberfeminism, which since the spread of the Internet had highlighted the structures of domination, marginalization and oppression inherent in technological systems.

At the end of the lecture there will be a time for sharing the personal “rituals”proposed by the guests and the local art community.

This lecture aims to present the themes and initial results of the research Casting a spell in computational regimes: ritual practices for a trans-feminist counter-apocalypse that curator Arianna Forte is conducting as part of the project supported by the Italian Council (2023) program promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

The renowned Italian anthropologist Ernesto De Martino investigated the ritual strategies of traditional cultures for years and defined them as cultural instruments of protection or redemption to support the collapse of any possible ordered universe of meanings.The symbolic efficacy of the ritual, its actions,its repetitions,its intentionalities, served to exorcize a profound crisis of existence, the perception of the end of the world.

What are the contemporary rituals to resist and address the entropic crisis found at every level of human experience and also of the imaginaries that run through today’s culture? From the pervasiveness of digital systems, the dominance of patriarchy, the collapse of climate change to the surveillance regimes of late capitalism?

We call for collecting each kind of digital esoteric ritual practices, personal or collective cultural tools, that each of us puts in place and wants to propose to navigate the ineffable of the contemporary, 

On Women’s Day, we ask you to come to Mz*Baltazar’s Laboratory and propose: your own art practice that uses ritual methodologies, your own personal spell, your digital summoning, your own herbal concoction or any kind of esoterism that can challenge the existing everydayness, specifically focusing on gender inequalities and digital capitalism.

Fürsorge ist zuallererst seit jeher eine zutiefst überlebensnotwendige Bedingung am Beginn eines jeden Menschenlebens und fungiert als eine treibende Kraft für die Entwicklung komplexer Beziehungsgeflechte innerhalb einer Gruppe, welche schlussendlich durch die Kultur- und Zivilisationsgeschichte zur Entstehung moderner öffentlicher Fürsorge Systeme führte.

In Zeiten der Corona-Pandemie zeigten sich viele Wunden des Wohlfahrtstaates wie z.B. der politisch jahrelang verschleppte Pflegenotstand, wobei die vielseitigen Herausforderungen der Fürsorge-Berufsgruppen zum ersten Mal in die Aufmerksamkeit einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit rückte. Parallel dazu verbreitet sich der Terminus der Fürsorge auf Social Media und hinterließ in so manchen theoretischen Diskursen sowie künstlerischen Praktiken seine Spuren, wobei hierbei insbesondere auch das Spannungsverhältnis von Fürsorge und Selbstfürsorge verhandelt wurde.

Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory, eine Gemeinschaft aus sechs Mitgliedern mit unterschiedlichen Biographien, Erfahrungen, Meinungen, Lebenskonzepten und schlussendlich persönlichen Bedürfnissen, mit einer gemeinsamen programmatischen Ausrichtung, pendelt sowohl im Team als auch in der Programmrealisierung mit den eingeladenen Künstler*innen und Akteur*innen zwischen dem Spannungsverhältnis von kollektiver Fürsorge und Selbstfürsorge.

Within the whimsical realm of “Metamorphosis Mayhem: The Musical”, SirenX and Auto CAT create a performative installation that invites visitors to joyfully plunge into the vibrational intricacies of caterpillar communication. The growing test setup melts karaoke, playfight, and a generative soundscape, opening up a space for interspecies flirtations and a specifically created form of wrestling: the caterpillar scramble or Raupenrauferei. By steering away from the common glorification of the butterfly and redirecting attention to both the resilience and silliness of the caterpillar stage, the project encourages appreciation for diverse journeys of transformation.

This collaboration is inspired by SirenXCaterpillar Vibrations, a research project initiated by Nicole Sabella in autumn of 2021 when they met a hairy yellow caterpillar called calliteara pudibunda aka Buchen-Streckfuß on Hundertwasserallee in Salzburg. Since then they have been exploring means of joint vibrational communication and finding ways of making caterpillar sounds and frequencies audible to the human ear – and vice versa.

In der wunderlichen Welt von “Metamorphosis Mayhem: The Musical” schaffen SirenX und Auto CAT eine performative Installation, die Besucher:innen dazu einlädt, freudig in die Schwingungseigenschaften der Raupenkommunikation einzutauchen. Die wachsende Versuchsanordnung verbindet Karaoke, Playfight und eine generative Klanglandschaft zu einem Raum für Flirtanbahnungem zwischen den Spezies und eine eigens entwickelte Form des Wrestlings: die Raupenrauferei. Anstatt der üblichen Verherrlichung des Schmetterlings zu folgen, lenkt das Projekt die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl auf die Widerstandsfähigkeit als auch auf die Verrücktheit des Raupenstadiums und ermutigt dazu, unterschiedliche Wege der Transformation zu würdigen.

Diese Zusammenarbeit ist inspiriert von SirenXCaterpillar Vibrations, einem Forschungsprojekt, das Nicole Sabella in jenem Moment initiierte, als sie im Herbst 2021 einer haarigen gelben Raupe namens Calliteara pudibunda alias Buchen-Streckfuß auf der Hundertwasserallee in Salzburg begegnete. Seitdem erforscht sie die Möglichkeiten gemeinschaftlicher vibrationaler Kommunikation und sucht nach Möglichkeiten, die Töne und Frequenzen von Raupen für das menschliche Ohr hörbar zu machen – und umgekehrt.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project that will be developed in the Fem-Lab residency is part of the series of speculative projects conducted by neuX, a futurisc interactive laboratory conducting experiments on pleasure and sexuality in post-humanism, from a performative and transfeminist perspective, where sci-fi erotic narratives, cyborg skins and biomateriality are intertwined with natural environments and dystopian scenarios.

This chapter focuses on the design and speculative research of a wearable sensory bio-textile that utilises surrounding natural elements and bodily fluids to generate activist frequencies.

The aim is to create a symbiotic link between the human body, its fluids and its surroundings for an active and visceral listening to the events and changes that are taking place, in and around us from a climatic, social and political perspective.

The tissue is made from biocircuits of bodily fluids, such as menstrual blood, to create a wearable interactive synthesiser using human and non-human, internal and external sounds;

each natural and bodily change will influence the frequency itself, generating activist noises that will open a discussion/performance that will challenge topical issues.

Questions that concern us include: What do we mean by an intersectional (queer) feminist practice of curating? What issues, questions and problems arise in this regard? What political need for action do we see and define? To what extent can we speak of a we? What can solidary, inclusive structures and practices in the art field look like, be created and implemented? Claims, Quests & Desires ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe  des feministischen Berliner Kunstraums alpha nova & galerie futura in Form eines Round-Tables und Think Labs, die sich verschiedenen Fragen rund um feministische Gegenwartsperspektiven und Zukünfte widmet und gemeinsam mit eingeladenen Gästen und weiteren Teilnehmer*innen Handlungsstrategien für feministische Wissensbildung und Praxen entwickelt und Allianzen schmiedet.

Für die Ausgabe von Claims, Quests & Desires in Wien möchten wir den Schwerpunkt auf kuratorische Praxen und die Produktion feministischer Kunsträume, Ausstellungen und Arbeitsweisen legen. Fragen, die uns dabei beschäftigen sind u.a.: Was verstehen wir unter einer intersektionalen (queer-)feministischen Praxis des Kuratierens? Welche Themen, Fragen und Problematiken stellen sich in dieser Hinsicht? Welchen politischen Handlungsbedarf sehen und definieren wir? Inwiefern kann von einem Wir gesprochen werden? Wie können solidarische, inklusive Strukturen und Praxen im Kunstfeld aussehen, geschaffen und umgesetzt werden? Welche Allianzen und Bündnisse sind dafür notwendig? Wie arbeiten wir zusammen?

This workshop will present a unique opportunity to explore uncharted digital territories. Participants will not only gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic world of technology and how it’s impacting everyday life, but will also have the chance to engage with some practical tests in order to explore how their emotional and cognitive skills are affected by the use of smartphone applications, vision enhanced softwares and other AI-generated content.

The workshop will be introduced by a presentation by Pamela Breda, PEEK project leader based at Angewandte University. With her talk, she will provide us with a comprehensive introduction to the current state-of-the-arts interactions between users and technology, sharing insights that challenge conventional wisdom and inspire innovative thinking.

About the exhibition:

“A culture of domination is anti-love. It requires violence to sustain itself. To choose love is to go against the prevailing values of the culture. Many people feel unable to love either themselves or others because they do not know what love is.” Bell Hooks (1994)

In the light of the current situation deeply shaped by conflicts and disasters caused by anthropocentric politics, actions and practices, we ask ourselves the question: “What’s love got to do with it?” 

In her writings Bell Hooks identifies Love as a blind spot within the human struggle for liberation, from oppression and exploitation. The white male supremacist domination of the planet attributed to love becoming a symptom of weakness, that love has no value. We might have forgotten what love really is or perhaps we’ve never really understood its meaning since it became capitalized and traded as a commodity-chain, sold as desire that can and should be consumed at a fast pace. Love in its true meaning is something that people might feel ashamed to relate with, as an old-fashioned concept, in the same way Tina Turner declined love in her musical success hit in 1984.

Loving is a verb that demands for action and for choice and can become an important tool to decolonize and to demystify systems of oppression. We need to critically question our position within the planet of beings and things. To love is to care for the others. Love is rooted in community, in exchange and democratic choices. In order to recover love we need social changes rooted in new love ethics. The exhibition “What’s love got to do with it?” aims to be an essay and a tribute to new love politics acknowledging caring as a crucial facet of Love for creating, repairing, and empowering our relations with the world.

Interstitial Alchemy by Catarina Reis

In ancient times practitioners of alchemy sought the transmutation of matter and the production of an elixir that would induce rejuvenation and cure all diseases, in a time when art, science, and mysticism belonged to the same realm. Although most of alchemy’s claims have been disproved by modern science, we now acknowledge its influence on the development of scientific methods. Through  speculative and ‘magical’ practices and narratives, alchemists dreamed of science for the future.

Interstitial Alchemy presents an experiment of practice-based artistic research, that speculates on the healing of aquatic ecosystems, through a process of transmutation of micro pollutants. The transmutation is mediated by a set of objects made from Zeolite clay. Zeolites possess a cage-like molecular structure that enables the selective ‘trapping’ of pollutants and toxins. To optimize this property, the work tests the production of porous and permeable objects, creating micro interstitial spaces, that could contribute to different ecological functions. This work is particularly interested in how an intervention on a microscale can affect broader ecosystems and their territories. In the last years scientists have demonstrated that ecological variability at small spatial scales—often less than a square meter — can have very significant consequences in big territories. So could we perform micro interventions that produce relevant transformations, potentially independent from anti-ecological political and economic and forces?

The installation is composed of three water tanks, connected through a water flow circuit. In the main tank is a set of Zeolite ceramic objects, capable of purifying the water. Behind the main water tank there are two screens representing two different scales of this system. In the other two tanks there is clean water, which the public is invited to contaminate with heavy metals and toxins, performing the role of a pollutant agent. Through this interaction the public is confronted with the negative effects of human actions in local aquatic environments, but also with the possibility of their remediation. While the water is flowing, the objects trap the noxious substances, changing their microstructure and physical appearance.

The design of these objects is inspired by the study of estuary oysters and freshwater pearl mussels – fundamental ecosystem healers capable of filtering  dozens of liters of water per day. The species of freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is currently endangered in the Danube, even though it can live up to 100 years or even more. As many other mollusks, mussels form pearls when a strange particle, bacteria or virus penetrates inside of the shell, by building layers of nacre. In this work, Catarina proposes to explore an ‘alchemic’ transmutation of micro pollutants inspired by oysters and mollusks’ capacity to persist and create beauty out of trauma.

“Riot im Riot” ist eine spielerische Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen feministischen Strategien der Vergangenheit. Ehemalige Bühnenelemente und Kostüme erzählen von vergangenen Riots. Mit gedanklichen performativen Übersetzungsversuchen anhand der verschiedenen Elemente von Ruth Erharter, Aylin Mutluer und Caro Wiltschek darf Widerstand imaginiert werden. Berenice Pahl holt Feministinnen der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart, Christina Jaques, Olivia Jaques und Anna Watzinger versuchen mit verschiedenen performativen Interventionen die Selbstermächtigung sowohl in urbanen Raumgefügen als auch im www zu erproben (“Was hat Datenschutz mit Emanzipation und dem Spiegel-Phänomen zu tun?”) und Conny Zenk lädt mit ihrem multidimensionalen “Soundride” ein zur Partizipation – auf ihren Spuren Withness Marlies Surtmann: Riot und Ride, Riot im Riot, Re-claiming the (imaginative) space.

“Riot im Riot” is a playful exploration of different feminist strategies of the past. Former stage elements and costumes talk about past riots. Resistance may be imagined through mental performative translations based on the various elements by Ruth Erharter, Aylin Mutluer and Caro Wiltschek. Berenice Pahl draws feminists of the past into the present, Christina Jaques, Olivia Jaques and Anna Watzinger try out self-empowerment with various performative interventions both in urban spatial structures and in the www (“What does data protection have to do with emancipation and the phenomena of a mirror?”) and Conny Zenk invites you to participate in her multidimensional “Soundride” – on her tracks Withness Marlies Surtmann: Riot and Ride, Riot in Riot, Re-claiming the (imaginative) space.

In der Ausstellung “Photons received, photons responded” zeigen zwei Künstlerinnen und Naturwissenschaftlerinnen ihre neuen Arbeiten – basierend auf ihrem Austausch und ihrer gemeinsamen Auseinandersetzung mit der solaren Strahlung und den uns umgebenden Strahlungprozessen. Das neugierige Verfolgen der Trajektorien der Photonen sensibilisiert für die Nicht-Linearität und Periodizität der Prozesse. Das künstlerische Auseinandernehmen von physikalisch optischen Gesetzen in der Dunkelkammer, sowie Messung und numerische Modellierung des Strahlungstransfers der Atmosphäre, zeigen dass die Naturgesetze uns immer wieder neu überraschen und verzaubern.

Die elektromagnetische Abstrahlung (also auch das Licht) ausgehend von der solaren Kernschmelze der Sonne, erreicht die Erde und ermöglicht Leben auf unserem Planeten. Diese Strahlung durchdringt und erwärmt unsere Atmosphäre und ermöglicht Photosynthese, treibt unser Wettersystem an und ist für unzählige komplexe Wechselwirkungen verantwortlich. Sogar fossile Energieträger basieren indirekt auf der Kernfusion der Sonne. Von dieser Fülle wird nur ein kleiner Teil wahrgenommen oder genutzt.

Die Künstlerinnen stellen nichts in Aussicht oder erheben Anspruch, sondern bieten einen naturwissenschaftlichen Fokus im künstlerischen Kontext an. Zu sehen sind experimentelle fotografische Arbeiten, eine Klangarbeit, eine performative Intervention, ein künstlerisch system analytischer Forschungstext, eine Lichtinstallation und Plots numerischer Simulationsergebnisse.

In the exhibition “Photons received, photons responded” two artists and scientists show their latest works – based on their exchange and their joint examination of solar radiation and the radiation processes that surround us. Curiously following the trajectories of the photons sensitizes to the non-linearity and periodicity of the processes. The artistic dismantling of physical-optical laws in the darkroom, as well as measurement and numerical modeling of the radiative transfer of the atmosphere, show that the laws of nature surprise and enchant us again and again.

The electromagnetic radiation (also the light) from the solar core meltdown of the sun reaches the earth and enables life on our planet. This radiation penetrates and warms our atmosphere, enabling photosynthesis, powering our weather system, and responsible for myriad complex interactions. Even fossil fuels are indirectly based on the sun’s nuclear fusion. Only a small part of this abundance is perceived or used.

The artists promise nothing or make any claims, but offer a scientific focus in an artistic context. Experimental photographic works, a sound work, a performative intervention, an artistic-system analytic research text, a light installation and plots of numerical simulation results can be seen.
